TechPitch 4.5: Pitch Workshop for startups

$

Date:
16 Sep 2014 - 09:30 - 17:30

Are you a tech startup? Do you need funds to grow and to develop your business and take your proposition to a wider audience? Are you considering approaching investors such as angels or VC's? If the answer is 'yes' to all these questions, then you might find the 2Pears pitch training workshops, run with the support of UK Trade and Investment (UKTI), useful.

The pitch-training workshops are available to attend for startups, small and early stage businesses in the UK, and to European tech companies looking to set up their business in the UK. 2Pears have to date trained over 600 tech startups to pitch for funding, so the workshops have a solid track record, and we get some great feedback: such as this from the co-founders of Swytch:

"[Julie - the trainer] was extremely helpful in distilling exactly what should be in a pitch and provided great tips on how to actually carry out the pitch. It was great that we were able to put something together in such a short time, present it to the room and then get immediate feedback from everybody - this was extremely helpful. [...] there aren't many places that you can go to learn how to put a good presentation and pitch together, it's assumed that every entrepreneur knows how to do this instinctively!"

We have now opened registration to the next two pitch workshop sessions taking place on the 16th of September.

About the pitch workshops:
The pitch-training workshops have a proven track record in providing a first crucial step for startups looking for funding. You will be surrounded by fellow entrepreneurs, which guarantees a supportive environment and delivers honest and insightful feedback from peers on your pitch - and some times even on your business and technology!

The half-day session covers:
- how to put together a pitch presentation and what needs to be included
- guidance and feedback on delivery skills
- how to overcome nerves and body language
- how to maximise networking opportunities at the event

Follow-on opportunities:

A large number of tech and music-tech startups proceed to pitch their business proposition to a wider audience of potential investors, journalists and fellow entrepreneurs, at the evening pitch competitions TechPitch 4.5 and Music TechPitch 4.5. The evening pitch competitions provide a platform for startups to create more awareness for their startup and to connect with the investor community and media. Many of the startups that have done the pitch-training and pitched at TechPitch 4.5 find the awareness generated helps them to go on to bigger and brighter things. We have followed up on a couple of our 2Pears alumni and you can read about their specific successes on the 4.5 Blog.

The pitch-training workshops are available to attend for startups, small and early stage businesses in the UK, and to European tech companies looking to set up their business in the UK.

A New Weapon for Combating Fraud: Gender Equality

Fraud Words and little man 2 by Mark Mathosian https://www.flickr.com/photos/markgregory/5412600537

Fraud is a very real consideration for businesses large and small across the UK, but new research shows gender equality in the boardroom might help fight its spread.

There are a seemingly limitless number of potential threats which prey on the smallest oversight or hint of corporate complacency, resulting in losses for the UK economy of over £85bn in the last year alone.

Fraud is in a constant state of evolution; for every scam identified, a new one is born which exploits a new weakness entirely.

The future for payments policy - infrastructure, regulation and consumer priorities

$

Date:
21 Feb 2017 - 08:30 - 13:30

This event is CPD Certified

Bringing together key policymakers and stakeholders from across the financial services sector, this timely conference will discuss the future for payments policy and regulation in the UK.

Delegates will assess the future of proposals set out in the European Commission’s recently revised Directive on Payments Services (PSD2) - particularly relating to the UK’s position in light of the EU Referendum - following the publication of the European Banking Authorities finalised Regulatory and Technical Standards on passporting under PSD2 later this year. The seminar will also consider the impact of the Financial Conduct Authority’s current consultation on the guidance provided to firms in complying with the future payment services regime.

Planned sessions focus on next steps for facilitating innovation and competitiveness across payments markets, whilst also ensuring adequate safeguards for consumers - particularly in terms of payment security and tackling financial fraud. Delegates will also have the opportunity to consider latest challenges in developing competitiveness in UK payments infrastructure, in light of the Payment System Regulator’s ongoing market studies on indirect access and ownership of payments systems.

Speakers and other delegates at this conference are expected to be a senior and informed group including Members of both Houses of Parliament, senior UK and European officials, together with academics, banks, building societies, charities, commentators, consultants, consumer groups, infrastructure providers, intermediaries, lawyers, merchant acquirers, money remitters, payments service users, payments system operators and technology firms, as well as members of the national and trade press.

At this early stage we are delighted that Andrea Enria, Chairperson, European Banking Authority

Sarah Francis, Consultant, Polymath Consulting; Fiona Ghosh, Partner, Payment Systems Group, Addleshaw Goddard; Simon Grossman, Vice President, Regulatory and Public Policy, MasterCard; Jeremy Light, Managing Director, Accenture Payment Services; Carl Packman, Research and Good Practice Manager, Toynbee Hall and a speaker confirmed from Bacs have also agreed to speak.

Medical Device Software: An Incremental Approach to Risk and Quality Management 2017

$

Date:
2 Nov 2017 - 09:00 - 3 Nov 2017 - 18:00

Course "Medical Device Software: An Incremental Approach to Risk and Quality Management" has been pre-approved by RAPS as eligible for up to 12 credits towards a participant's RAC recertification upon full completion.

Overview:

Engineers are dedicated to making things work, so a focus on how they might fail and harm someone can seem alien.

Managing risk, however, is essential for all medical products- medical devices, including those involving software, have produced some painful examples of poor risk management with serious consequences. Experience has shown that there is a better way, that it is possible to manage risk in a changing business and technical world.

Regulatory bodies are placing increased emphasis on risk management, and technology shifts are introducing new sources of risk. Newer Lean-Agile methods are recognized by the FDA as a good way to accomplish risk management.

Techniques for risk management are well established, but require specific interpretation when applied to software. In this session, we will show a way of knitting risk management into the development process, so that it is integral to product development, not a ten ton caboose dragging the train back down the mountain.

Why you should attend:

Perhaps your engineering team is beginning its transition to an Agile approach - or perhaps you have a seasoned Agile team and you're just beginning work on FDA-regulated products. You know that risk management is required, but it's not at all clear how you should address it as you go through your backlog grooming, iterations, and end-user demonstrations. The process in ISO 14971 seems "linear" and unsuited to a highly iterative, dynamic lifecycle. How can you fit it into your approach?

Areas Covered in the Session:

  • Software has introduced (or been blamed for) some serious safety hazards
  • All medical device standards intersect on the topic of risk management
  • Risk analysis starts with the intended use statement
  • Risk information is available from multipl sources - use them!
  • Note that safety is an emergent property
  • Changes are often the biggest sources of risk
  • Don't ignore the human factors side; understanding your users is crucial to safety
  • Applying engineering risk methods to software requires us to translate some concepts
  • Though standards draw a roadmap for risk management, WE must figure out the route
  • Risks often arise when we add new features - so incremental risk management is the most effective
  • Forget the notion that "software can't hurt anyone"
  • Never conduct risk analysis by using a checklist from 14971
  • Exploding technology brings numerous chances for risk to multiply

Who will benefit:

  • Project managers
  • Regulatory specialists
  • Quality assurance specialists
  • Documentation specialists
  • Test managers
  • Software team leaders and lead developers

Agenda:

Day 1 Schedule   Lecture 1:

Software brings great capability to medical devices, but also creates hazards

Lecture 2:

Consider how the key standards lay out the roadmap for managing risk

Lecture 3:

Understand the key concepts - hazard, risk, and harm

Lecture 4:

Walk through ISO 14971 in detail - and consider IEC 80002-1 for specific software concerns

Day 2 Schedule   Lecture 1:

Fault tree analysis and FMEA complement each other for risk analysis

Lecture 2:

Risk analysis for software is different from hardware - and needs a place in the lifecycle

Lecture 3:

Story mapping helps bring risk management directly into development

Lecture 4:

An incremental approach manages both risk and quality
